Speculative internal layout of SpaceX Starship by Michel Lamontagne

In the result of a discussion on NASASpaceFlight.com forum about possible internal layout of SpaceX's first crewed Starship bound for Mars Canadian design engineer Michel Lamontagne (on the forum known as lamontagne) has came up with graphics of his version for Starship's possible internal layout.   1. Before anyone comments; this is a layout for the first crewed ship to Mars that will serve as a habitat for a while, for 8 people per ship. That is why it is laid out for gravity. :-) It is not the final version for 40 people. This of it a RV version of a bus.

    1. A luxury liner if compared to later Starship versions with bunks for 100 people (if such version will be even built) :D

    2. Yes, I think that 100 people may require a larger ship. I guess you could fit 100 people into 100 5m3 rooms, and that would leave 500m3 for services and such, but I have yet to see anyone actually manage to model it.

    3. And who knows, maybe within just a few short years of flying the 9m diameter block, they will upgrade to the 12m diameter block.

    4. Elon Musk tweeted that the next version of starship could have a 18m diameter block.

    5. The 18m version is at least a decade away, probably two. No practical need for such a big ship sooner than that.

  2. These illustrations give me the most visceral sense yet of what it would be like to ride in the real vehicles - at least as currently envisioned. Of course, all of this may be "up for grabs" until the August 24 presentation by Elon Musk on the latest changes to Starship design - and that will probably not be the last update of said design.
    Michel: I notice a repeating hexagonal pattern in the external structure, depicted in the illustration on the right in the graphic entitled "Observation / galley deck." Is that meant to depict the hexagonal heat shield tiles which have been mentioned by Elon Musk? If so, this demonstrates a superior (IMHO) eye for detail, as I don't think I've seen said tiles depicted in Starship illustrations before.

    3. Yes, it's the tiles. Have had them on for a bit more than a month now. But as mentioned, Sam Taylor does a much better job overall, and had a better grasp of lighting and drama.

    1. But there is no way, unless you want to tie a cable in the nose of two ships and swing them around :-)
      Fortunately, the trip should be shorter than what is usually mentioned in various reports. Starship should use a quick hyperbolic orbit and aerocapture into Mars' atmosphere for direct descent. In 2024, there is a 122 days possibility in November. https://trajbrowser.arc.nasa.gov/traj_browser.php
      Slarty 1080 has a more 0g feel to his design, if you prefer that.

    2. This feels like it would work with an "Epstien" drive from The Expanse.. just cruise at 1/3g for half the way there, then flip and burn at 1/3g during the deceleration phase.

  5. I like the layout. The wide open spaces (might look like wasted space) will surely be needed on a two year mission. There will however be things on board like Oxygen generators and Co2 scrubbers not to talk of water retainers and a waste purifier plant. All within the pressure vessel might change the layout a bit but I am all for a clinical look devoid of ducting and cluttered piping. It will however be interesting to see how they will combat radiation. Maybe a double walled Starship (at least the crew area) filled with aerogel or something similar?

  6. Using a centrifugal or rotational gravity as seen with your representation of earth to the right on the page can be achieved with SpaceX Starship based on the diagrams I've seen recently. The central core could be modified to simulate gravity with the force pulling outward and acceleration going forward. There are some pretty smart engineers at SpaceX, they can do it. This system could be tied into a hydraulic hydrolytic system using urine. Separating components and partial hydrolysis of water using minimal current over long periods. Pressure will build and the extra gas used as backup thrusters.
