Starship will have unique heat shield with windward side (receiving higher pressure from air molecules) of the stainless steel ship having double-layer hull regeneratively cooled by liquid propellant evaporating through microscopic holes on the outer layer. With most of the heat already mirrored away by the shiny hull this system will (hopefully) provide to Starship a robust and cheaply reusable protection from entry heat.
Its a thing of beauty and its also a joy to see a new rocket after so many years. I hate to even menton it but from a desighn point of view is their any way to safe mode the passengers if it tips over on landing? Maybe without fuel it wont explode but then what, maybe let the engineres eject so they can come in from the outside?

ReplyDeleteEpic!
ReplyDeleteWill the lower stage also be steel?
ReplyDeleteYes. Elon has confirmed it.
DeleteIs the reentry temperature in Earth's atmosphere suitable for Stainless steel?
